City Council Discusses Residential Parking, Traffic Committee, and Open Space Management at Jan. 22 Meeting
The Rocklin City Council received a special visit from two of the three Rocklin Police Department K-9 teams at their meeting on January 22. Officer Jeremy Black and Officer Tim Sartain stopped by with their K-9 partners, Condor and Bronco respectively, and each shared how they serve the community and fight crime in Rocklin with patrol operations and illegal drug detection.
After the dogs made their way back to patrol, the Council approved a resolution to accept the City’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR); introduced an ordinance related to building code standards; and discussed potential action items related to residential vehicle parking, an ad-hoc traffic safety committee, and vegetation and open space management.

As the chief executive officer of the City, I supervise operations, direct departments and services, and enforce the laws and policies as adopted by the City Council. To help us prudently manage resources and serve the people of Rocklin, the City Council and staff recently updated the City’s strategic plan that guides department operations and projects.
Wall of Recognition Honors Rocklin Contributors
November 1, 2018
Roy Ruhkala, the patriarch of the Rocklin Ruhkalas at over 90 years old, was front and center with multiple generations of his family at the unveiling of the Rocklin Wall of Recognition on Nov. 1 at Peter Hill Heritage Park. The Ruhkalas were joined by two other groups of honorees whose accomplishments were etched on the wall, including representatives of the Rocklin Public Safety Volunteers and former long-time Rocklin City Manager Dr. Carlos Urrutia and his family.
Rocklin Ranked the Best Place to Raise a Family in Placer County
The City of Rocklin was recently named the Best Place to Raise a Family in Placer County based on research by Niche.com, a website that ranks cities, neighborhoods and schools in various categories.
The Best Places to Raise a Family ranking takes into account factors including safety, access to family amenities, affordability and schools, with much of the data sourced from the U.S. census or Niche’s own research.
Land Use and RHNA Ad Hoc Committee Meetings to Begin Oct. 19
The City Council formed the Land Use/Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) Ad Hoc Committee in August of 2018 to provide the City Council with recommendations pertaining to land use balance, guidelines for evaluation of specific types of rezones, updates to the RHNA available sites inventory, and development standards for mixed use zones.

Rocklin Appoints New City Attorney
Sheri Chapman was appointed to the position of Rocklin City Attorney after her four-year contract was unanimously approved by the Rocklin City Council on September 11, 2018.
Chapman most recently served Placer County as Interim Director of Human Resources, taking on that management role after vacating her previous position as Deputy County Counsel. Chapman has also served as Assistant County Counsel for Nevada County and Senior Deputy City Attorney for the City of Sacramento.
Junior Police Academy Invites Youth Behind the Blue Line
The job of a police officer requires a wide-range of skills, not the least of which include detailed observation, problem solving, and clear communication with the public. The 2018 Rocklin Jr. Police Academy provided a select group of local students the chance to experience these challenges first hand.
Wealth of Information Offered by City GIS Online Maps
The term Geographic Information Systems may sound complicated to many people, like a mixture geography and information technology classes hazily recalled from long-ago college days.
While the practice and implementation does require knowledge and skill from both sciences, using the end product boils down to simply viewing useful information displayed by online maps.
Summer Program Provides Career Insight to Local Students
High school students today often don’t have professional experience to draw from when looking forward to college and choosing a career path. The City of Rocklin, in partnership with the Rocklin Unified School District (RUSD) and the Rocklin Educational Excellence Foundation (REEF), facilitates the Summer Civic Career Program each year to provide approximately 10 students a two-week crash course in working for local government.
The Rocklin Police Department Awarded Grant to Combat Illegal Tobacco Use
The City of Rocklin was recently awarded State grant funding in the amount of $200,680 from the California Department of Justice.
The purpose of the grant is to assist law enforcement in combating the illegal sale of cigarettes, vapor inhalation devices and other tobacco related products to minors.
Funding for this grant is made possible as a result of Proposition 56, the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016, which raised the cigarette tax by $2 per pack.
Fire Prevention Always a Priority
The summer season begins this month and the City of Rocklin wants to remind everyone that a proactive approach to fire prevention is important to keeping the community safe.
The Rocklin Fire Department Community Risk Reduction Division works daily with residents, contractors, and commercial property owners to provide guidance, approve plans, inspect projects, and ensure a fire-safe environment for patrons and employees of businesses.
Water Spraygrounds
There’s nothing better to beat the heat than to play in the spray!
Water spraygrounds are located at Kathy Lund Park (6101 West Oaks Blvd.) and Whitney Park (1801 Whitney Ranch Pkwy.). They will open May 14 through Oct. 15 from 10am to 7:30pm, 7 days a week.

Quarry Park is Prepped and Ready for the 2018 Concert Series!
The Platinum Living Amphitheater at Quarry Park has excited crowds since its opening in 2016 by hosting star-powered national acts in addition to up-and-coming local bands. Now entering its third season, the summer concert series continues to evolve, bringing a variety of talent and sounds to Rocklin.
“We wanted to have a well-rounded season that touches on different musical styles,” says Dana Moret, Production Coordinator for the City of Rocklin. “It’s something the community has been asking for so you’ll see a little bit of everything at Quarry Park this year.”
Rocklin honors local organizations with Business Legacy Awards
The City of Rocklin honored the Ruhkala Granite and Marble Company, Inc. and Sierra College with 125th Anniversary Business Legacy Awards on January 18.
The Business Legacy Awards were created as part of Rocklin’s year-long 125th anniversary celebration and honor local organizations that have made significant contributions to the success of the City’s economy in the past and present, as well as affecting the future.
City Council Unanimously Appoints Councilmember Ken Broadway as 2018 Mayor
Councilmember Ken Broadway was appointed to serve as Mayor of the City of Rocklin through November 2018 with a unanimous vote by the Rocklin City Council Tuesday night. Councilmember Joe Patterson was also installed as the 2018 Vice-Mayor with a unanimous vote.
Pioneer Community Energy to Provide Lower Cost Power
Placer County and its communities team up for lower costs and local authority
The County of Placer and the cities of Rocklin, Auburn, Colfax, Lincoln, and the Town of Loomis have partnered to create Pioneer Community Energy, which will begin providing energy to those jurisdictions in February, 2018.

In Rocklin City Parks
An ordinance fully prohibiting smoking in all city parks, recreation areas and city owned property will become effective on July 13, 2017. The no-smoking restriction includes electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
U.S. Honor Flag Raised in Rocklin to Honor Heroes
The U.S. National Honor Flag was raised at the Rocklin Police Station on Monday, May 1, to honor Rocklin police officers, firefighters, first responders and military personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty and those who currently serve our communities and nation.
Rocklin City Manager Rick Horst, The Rocklin Police Department and the Rocklin Fire Department participated in the ceremony with The Honor Network President and Co-Founder Chris Heisler.
Rocklin City Council Declares Support for Big Day of Giving
The Rocklin City Council encourages all Rocklin citizens to support of the Big Day of Giving by donating to a local non-profit close to their heart on Thursday May 4, 2017.
Close to 600 nonprofits throughout the region will participate in the BIG Day of Giving, 100 of which are located in Placer County and serve City of Rocklin residents.
Three leaders of hardworking non-profits making an impact and providing a sense of pride in the community were in attendance at the April 25 Council meeting, where the Council passed a resolution of support.
